Acne is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous (oily) glands of the skin that leads to the production of pimples. Acne most commonly affects the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and upper back, which have a high concentration of sebaceous follicles. Blackheads and whiteheads (technically known as open and closed comedones) develop when the follicles become clogged and inflamed. When pimples become badly inflamed, they can become painful cysts. These cysts are located deep in the skin and can lead to acne scarring. At Generations Medical Aesthetics, we can help prevent acne; we can treat existing acne; and we can treat and improve acne scars.

What causes acne?

Acne can affect a person from teen years through menopause, and is caused by many different factors:

  • Hormone increases in teenage years (this can cause more oil production)
  • Hormone changes during pregnancy
  • Starting or stopping birth control pills
  • Heredity (if your parents had acne, you might get it, too)
  • Some types of medicine
  • Make-up
  • Using the wrong skin care for your skin type
  • Menopause
